Learning English Vocabulary

The English say, "One word you can use is better than a hundred words you know but cannot use." Vocabulary is a fundamental part of any language. Even if you are skilled in many areas of a language, a lack of strength in vocabulary leaves your communication incomplete. Learning vocabulary is relatively easy, but using it correctly can be slightly more challenging and requires practice. The best approach is to learn words in a way that makes both understanding and usage easier. That’s exactly what we will discuss here.

Firstly, whenever you learn a new word, try to learn other related words from its family; that is, learn different forms of that word. For example, if you encounter a noun like "teacher," look for and learn other forms of that word, such as the verb, adjective, or adverb forms:

- Teacher (noun)

- Teach (verb)

- Teaching (adjective)

This method helps you memorize many related words because they all belong to the same word family, differing only in their endings.

Another example: if you learn an adjective, check its other forms or degrees, such as positive, comparative, and superlative degrees. If the word is a verb, examine its other forms, including present tense, third-person singular, past tense, continuous form, and future form. For instance:

- Go / Goes / Went / Going

By following this approach, you will learn different aspects of the word along with related vocabulary in an easy and organized way.

Effective methods for learning vocabulary include the following:

1. Write down your target vocabulary, ideally by grouping them into categories. For example, place school-related words in one group.

2. Write synonyms or related words and example sentences for each target word.

3. Use those words in sentences relevant to your daily life to practice them effectively.

4. Create a short story or paragraph using those target words, ensuring that you correctly apply different forms such as nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc., in context.

More on this will be discussed later.
